On June 25, 2013, nine US high school students will be traveling to Guatemala with Perduco's Con Los Ojos Abiertos! 2013, an extraordinary experiential learning adventure of Spanish language instruction, cultural studies, and service learning at Escuela Proyecto La Esperanza, The School of Hope.

Having met our initial fund raising goal of $531 with 20 days still left to the campaign, we're aiming our sights higher - can we raise a total of $1,000 to stock the materials storeroom of La Escuela Esperanza? That's only $450 more and 20 days to raise it!
The initial goal provides the necessary materials and supplies for the educational activities we have planned while in Guatemala this summer. However, there is still a greater need present. School continues through July and August for the students at La Escuela Esperanza - all 500+ of them, and they need materials and supplies to work with.
Dan Burgess, the on-site EFTC business manager, has informed me the inventory of the materials storeroom is low and they are in need of more stationery, paper, exercise books, pens, pencils, crayons, color pencils, felt-tips, board pens, etc.
Let's stock the storeroom for them!
A contribution of $10 goes a long way in stocking the storeroom.
Consider making a financial contribution today!

If you would still like to sponsor a team of teens in Guatemala this summer, but have not got around to doing so, there are only eight sponsorships left at $59 each.
Thanks again to our supporters! We're looking forward to sharing this extraordinary experience with you.

Escuela Proyecto La Esperanza is a project school of Education for the Children (EFTC), whose primary focus is education – giving students the skills and the knowledge to break free from a life of poverty.
Approximately 75% of the population [of Guatemala] is estimated to live below the poverty line*. This 75% lives in extreme poverty; occupying poor land and working incredibly hard to fight prejudice and improve their circumstances. Education is beyond the reach of this large section of the population who struggle to feed their families day after day. (EFTC)
While at The School of Hope, participating students will engage in a five-day, co-creation, hands-on skills-building activity, working collaboratively with a Guatemalan peer, to produce a solution to a challenge. Co-creation allows and encourages active involvement from the students to create a value rich experience.
The Challenges:
Los Puentes: Students participating in this activity will have five days to build a railroad trestle with their partner, out of a given set of materials - wood (limited number of coffee stirrers), string, and glue - to span a distance of four feet between two tables. The completed trestle must be able to support a moving electric train with a hopper car full of rocks from one table to the other without falling off the bridge.
Las Máscaras: Students participating in this activity will have five days to create two face masks, with their partner, out of a given set of materials: plaster gauze and various arts and crafts materials, i.e. feathers, sequins, paint, etc. Masks must share at least one common design element. In addition, students will prepare a short performance (with or without music) to introduce their masks to the group.
The US/Guatemalan teams and their chosen challenge:
Jen and Marta, Los Puentes
JD and Marvin, Los Puentes
Nick and Mercy Andrea, Los Puentes
Cole and Mariela, Los Puentes
Brian and Jenifer, Los Puentes
Jordyn and Elizabeth, Las Mascaras
Liam and Manuela, Las Mascaras
Ryan and Joel, Los Puentes
Matthew and Selvin, Los Puentes
Money pledged to the campaign will be used to purchase the materials and supplies necessary to complete the challenges. All materials and supplies will be left with The School of Hope.

Project FAQ
Ask the Campaign Team a questionFoxboro, Massachusetts, United States
In many ways, Perduco feels and looks like a school, although the conventional education components have been arranged in a different way, creating a unique educational entity. Perduco is an alternative to traditional public and private education, providing educational services, resources, and tools, for homeschooled, unschooled, and conventionally schooled children.
As Steve Jobs has stated, "creativity is just connecting things."
At Perduco, members are simply connecting things, things that are already collectively familiar to us, or things we want to learn more about, such as child behavior, organizational structures, curriculum materials, systems, technology, teaching and learning, processes, family challenges, deductive reasoning, cultural standards, etc. It's a wonderful work in progress.
Perduco emphasizes positive personal values, high achievement, and meaningful participation in the learning process (self-directed learning) and the greater learning community.
Student members of Perduco are currently 10 - 16 years of age.
